Have you been to the nursing homes? Have you seen the loneliness and know how much the elderly parents long to catch a glimpse of their children? These are the scenes and experiences of those left in the nursing homes by their children. Their children cannot be bothered to visit them and in cases even not pay for the parents’ care when the homes are going to kick them out. Should this be the way children treat their parents who had given them their all? No, I think not. It should be the responsibility of the children to care for their parents. Hence, I strongly agree that the government should allow a third party, such as the nursing homes, to take the children to task on behalf of their parents if they are not able to do so.
Firstly, I would like to ask everyone to take a moment to reflect on your own personal life. Who were the ones who provided you with the nourishment you needed and gave you the best to their means? I am sure that is none other than your parents. They were the ones who spent and have given you the best. I know this myself for my parents too would rather provide me with the better things. This is the love that parents would shower on their children. So, isn’t it right for the children to look after their parents when they have grown up and able to do so? Some may say that their parents are ill and they are not able or do not know how to take care of them, and so they send them to nursing homes. I would not deny that it is in the interests of the parents to receive the proper treatment, but at the very least we as children should visit our parents on a weekly basis and pay for the parents’ care. There is no doubt that it is the responsibility for the children to support their parents. Therefore, if they do not even pay for the costs, the government should allow the nursing homes to take the children to task.
Some may say that they themselves are unable to provide enough for themselves and their own children. I acknowledge that they are some difficulties that one may face. However, we can approach each constituency and seek help from them, be it going for specific skills training or finding jobs. The government is offering help to all with their economic problems, so children should take the first step to receive such help and thereby able to support and pay for their parents’ care so that they would not be kicked out of the homes.
My second point is that the nursing homes also need funds to support the elderly parents, and if all the children were to just leave their parents there and not pay for the costs, then in no time, all the funds from the charities and generous people would be sapped dry. As I have mentioned, caring for the parents should be the duty of the children, it is therefore just for the children to contribute for the parents’ care. It is even more appalling to know that the children do not wish to pay even when their parents are going to be kicked out of the homes. Hence, they should be taken to task by the nursing homes to get them to pay up and allowing their parents to continue staying there.
Think about it, many years down the road, you too would become old and weak. You may one day be in the shoes of these elderly parents now, being kicked out of homes as your children did not pay for the costs. Hence, my conclusion is that the government should allow a third party to take the children to task so as to protect the interests of the elderly parents.
